Oyama have been growing in stature over the last few years (and indeed the last few Airwaves festivals). Last year they released and excellent six-track record featuring excellent songs such as Wasted. Any day now they will be unleashing a new album ready for all those excellent music-hungry visitors, especially those who like their shoegaze noisy and melodic. Lead single from the new album (Coolboy) ‘Siblings’ is previewed below.
Last year the five-piece managed to cause a stir when their show in the entrance area of Harpa managed to disturb a classical concert going on in one of the halls. Keep reading for reaction to that and so much more!
Hello Oyama! Where are you right now, and what are you doing?
Hi! I'm at school trying to study, but mostly thinking about what I'm gonna eat for lunch. Not sure what the other guys are doing, hopefully making me a surprise lunch.
Who is in the band?
Me (Úlfur) voice-acting and playing the guitar, Kári playing guitar through a BILLION effect pedals, Júla growling and playing keyboards, Bergur playing the dad-guitar (aka bass) and doing some sexy scat-singing and Rúnar playing the drums.
Now, you noisy lot caused a bit of a stir last year when your show in entrance hall at Harpa drowned out the classical show in the main hall. Are you planning to avoid such things this time, or play louder than ever before?
Yeah is was quite funny last year when our off-venue show at Harpa accidentally disturbed the Ólafur Arnalds and Icelandic Symphony Orchestra show. But we are not going to rest until we have disturbed ALL of their shows. Those bastards.
What does Iceland Airwaves mean to the Icelandic music community, is it just fun? Or are you really hoping to catch the eye internationally?
Airwaves is really important for the Icelandic music community, but still not really. It's so random if a band gets picked up or recognized that it's kind of like a lottery. A band can play at Airwaves 5-6 years in a row and nothing happens, you know? Everyone is in it for the fun but of course one always hopes to grab some foreign attention. But it's best not to think too much about it and just do your thing.
Where in the world would you most love to play?
Somewhere sunny and warm. Preferably at like a beach party.
I believe that you've signed with 12 Tónarfor a new album. How is the recording going? Will it be available in time for Airwaves?
We finished recording and mixing the album in September and it went really well. Pétur Ben produced it and it was so nice have him on board, he really helped us see the potential in each song and how to work on them. The album will be out November 3rd in Iceland via 12 Tónar and October 29th in Japan via Imperial Records. So be sure to check it out when you're at Airwaves!
Have you had a good look at the Airwaves schedule? What else are you really excited to see?
The Knife. OMG.
Finally, can you give some advice for people attending Iceland Airwaves and visiting Iceland for the first time?
Don't worry too much about seeing ALL the bands. Take it easy, talk to people, have a beer and try not to worry about anything.
Oyama play at Iceland Airwaves as follows:
Wednesday 5th, KEX Hostel @ 19:30
Thursday 6th, 12 Tónar @ 18:15
Friday 7th, Gaukurinn @ 21:40
