Fufanu are a band on the up and a key band to watch at this year’s Iceland Airwaves. At some point in the last year they lost the first half of their name (Captain) and have transformed from techno into a different kind of band. One of their latest releases, Circus Life, reminds me of something like peak-era Depeche Mode. I can’t wait to see how this transition shows up on stage – presumably with a lot more live instrumentation than we’ve seen from them before. It’s an exciting time for the band, after Airwaves they come to London for JaJaJa and a then only a date at the actual Royal Albert Hall.
Hi Fufanu! Where are you, and what are you doing?
Hi Mark! We are in Iceland and we are trying to organize our next music video.
Who is in the band?
It is Kaktus, Guðlaugur and Frosti
What happened to captain? You used to be Captain Fufanu!
We left the Captain at a techno club in Cologne.
That's not the only change; your sound has changed quite a bit over the last few years. Can you just explain that transition a little?
The transition was just a very natural development. We never planned any change in direction; it just came from implementing more live instruments.
I've seen talk of an album on the way – when can we expect that to arrive?
We are not sure when it will be released but One Little Indian will be releasing our album as soon as it is ready. Hopefully a lot sooner than later.
And then you have an exciting trip to London after Iceland Airwaves, to play at the JaJaJa festival and then support Damon Albarn at the Royal Albert Hall. That's amazing – what a fabulous, how excited are you?
We are so excited, it is going to be a very big opportunity for us and we are focused on making the most out of it and give Damon's fans a great show!
Was the link between Damon and Ghostigital part of the reason he knew about you guys?
Yes, Kaktus has known Damon for many years and he played him our demos which led to this support show.
Can you give a piece of advice for people coming to Airwaves this year?
We recommend people walk between off venues during the day eat dinner at K-bar and don't miss seeing our friends Muck, Döpur, Zebra Katz, Samaris, Ghostigital and FM Belfast.
