iceblah at Airwaves Wednesday

iceblah at Airwaves Wednesday

DSC02845 It's funny how nights at Airwaves never quite turn out as planned. First stop was meant to be the Project Iceland party at B5 bar, but 8:30 was clearly an unfashionably early time to turn up there, nothing had begun and I'm sorry to say I never did make it back there for the party. This is a shame because Charlie Strand has produced a wonderful book full of great photos of the contemporary culture of this country and deserves all the support in the world for it.

Instead we took the chance to go to NASA to see Vicky – and what a good decision that was, these girls were great indeed. Once I had managed to stop staring in awe at one guitarist's incredible gravity-defying hair and the other's unbelievable moustache and started listening properly, they really were impressive. Good banter between songs too, especially the speculation about marrying a fellow band on the line-up at NASA and becoming Vicky Clyro. Their debut album, "Pull Hard" comes out this week and may well be added to the lengthening wish-list. From there the plan was definitely to head to Tunglid for the Kimi Records night and the brilliant Benni Hemm Hemm. This was clearly the plan for lots of people, the queue looked unbearable so hasty plans were hatched to head instead to Hresso…

Hresso is a lovely place to hang out in the daytime, really relaxed, great coffee and the food always looks good. However, it seemed to me that it isn't really a natural main venue for Airwaves. The sound was patchy, sometimes too quiet and there were other technical problems, and I really think that more than two toilets is probably a good idea. I know very very well that Mammut and Jeff Who are great bands and excellent live performers, but Mammut were too quiet (although I was at the back) and Jeff Who had to stop more than once to sort out problems. Both did a great job in the circumstances; in fact and Jeff Who's new stuff which I hadn't previously heard makes me think a treat is in store when the album appears.

DSC02849The second attempt to get into Kimi Records night at Tunglid was more successful so we joined my favourite UK DJ, John Kennedy of xfm, and lots of very crushed looking people in enjoying a great set by Retro Stefson – another album appearing this week to add to that list. They had loads of energy, great songs and really had the place jumping. Energy is also a good word for the night's headliners, Reykjavik! OK, so we all know that these guys are one of my very very favourites but once again they did not disappoint. As ever, front-man Boas (above, with red eyes) quickly tired of the boring old stage and took to climbing around the venue, on top of speakers, photographers and the audience. The only time he returned to the stage was to climb on the nearest thing he could find, usually guitarist Haukur (right). These boys are great value live, with a bunch of great sounding new songs and a new album on sale at the venue, their future looks assured, and I'm sure I'll see them again before the week is out.

The walk home paused, of course, at the hot dog stall – I was lucky enough to get the very last one available for the evening – although I had wanted two – ah, it's good for me I guess.

Tomorrow should bring more fun, performances by Gus Gus and Ghostigital, meeting up with genius cartoonist Hugleikur Dagsson and of course my interview for grapevine newspaper with Spregjuhollin. Fun fun fun…
