iceblah interviews #5 – Reykjavik!, FM Belfast & Retro Stefson

Part 5 already! Here are my interviews with 3 bands that I really really can't wait to see this year. Personal favourites Reykjavik! have been staggeringly good every time I've seen them (which is a lot) I always end their shows out of breath, I don't quite know how they do it – but if it's your first time… brace yourself! Then FM Belfast and Retro Stefson, whose reputation has been growing and growing over the last year – quite rightly, check out the myspace links below for some very very fine tunes. All these bands have some great new songs to play you (actually you can get free downloads and see that I'm not the only person loving these bands on the Guardian website), new albums about to appear and should be on everybody's Airwaves shopping lists… I dare you to see these bands and not come away grinning…

Hello Reykjavik!, where are you and what are you doing?

I am in my living room watching Alþingi live on television. They are talking about how fucked we are during these hard times in the world the króna, our currency. It is messed up, really. When you come here, with your foreign money you can buy twice as much for the same amount of money during the airwaves weekend. It’s happy hour for foreigners 24/7 here!

Who’s in the band?
A bunch of nice guys; Geiri, Gummi, Valdi, Haukur, Kriss and me, Boas.

Blog readers have a short attention span, can you describe your music in 3 words?

Violent, absorbing, rough!

Probably, 5 other bands will play Airwaves at the same time as you, so why should people come and see your show?
They should if they want to, you know. We promise to put on a show as intense as shows get. That is what we have always done, that is what we will always do. We shout out until our throats are bleeding, we play our instruments until they or us break and we try to make sure that no one leaves a Reykjavík! concert untouched.

What other bands will you try to see at the festival?

I will try to see FM Belfast, Retro Stefson, Skátar, Mínus, Morðingjarnir, Sudden Weather Change, Ben Frost, Valgeir Sigurðsson, Nico Muly and those bedroom people. I would like to see Slugs, Benni Hemm Hemm, Æla, Familjen, Boys in a band, Vampire Weekend and so many others. You know, there are only like 3 bands that I don’ t want to see!

Reykjavik! will be touching Airwaves festival goers on Wednesday at Tunglid at midnight, at Organ on Friday night (Saturday morning) at 2am. They also play at Skifan record shop on Saturday at 4 in the afternoon.

FM Belfast

Reykjavík! Skakkamanage, Retro Stefson and Sykur.

Everyone has an opinion, but how and why does the Icelandic music scene that seems to produce such a large number of good bands?
Nothing else to do, no one wants to sound like anything else and the rest no one knows.

FM Belfast will be spreading fun at Tunglid on Thursday at midnight, and pretty much closing the festival at Nasa on Saturday night (Sunday morning) at 1:45am. They are also playing off-venue shows on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons.

Exceptionally good music schools, and its so cold outside that the only thing you can do is to have band practises if you want to meet the gang!
