OK, so here are the first two of about 20 interviews that I'll try to post here between now and the start of Airwaves in less than a week.
First up, the relentlessly jangly Dýrðin,
Hello, where are you
and what are you doing?
Hi there. Dýrðin is based in Reykjavik city and currently we are busy rehearsing for Airwaves. We've been busy writing
new songs and most of the live program this time will be centred around them.
That will make a good change since we mostly played the same old songs last
three years. We have enough for another album now and hope to release one in
the near future.
Who’s in the band?
The band started as a trio, but now there are a total of seven in the band.
Einar plays guitar and his sister Hafdis sings. I (Magnus) play bass, Kolbrun
plays keyboards. Toti is the drummer and he also plays in a punk band called
Vonbrigdi (of Rokk i Reykjavik fame) and was at some time in both Risaedlan and Jupiters. Sigrun from
Bellatrix (also known as Kolrassa Krokridandi) plays guitar and sings backing
vocals. Lara Sveindottir joins us as a full time backing vocalist. You might
remember her from a band called The Funerals.
Blog readers have a short attention span,
can you describe your music in 3 words?
Relentlessly jolly jangling japes… D'oh that's 4 words.
Probably, 5 other bands will play
Airwaves at the same time as you, so why should people come and see your show?
Hmm, interesting question. We hope that we'll get a good spot this time along
with some popular headlining act, so that most people will be at our gig
anyway. Last year we had to compete with Bloc Party and that was a losing
battle. With our luck we'll play at the same time as CSS now. The few people
who saw us last time were flabbergasted to say the least, and pitchforkmedia
hailed Dýrðin as the "discovery of the festival". That should be
reason enough to check us out and dismiss everything else.
What other bands will you try to see at
the festival?
It's always refreshing to see Æla play (unless they're playing at the same time
we are). I'd also like to see Motion Boys, since our long time friend and
founding member of the band now plays bass with them. Ultra Mega Technobandið
Stefán are always a treat. First time I saw them I opted to hide behind a
pillar so I wouldn't get tackled. I also heartily recommend Hellvar and Vicky
Pollard, and Singapore Sling will clean out your ears in a jiffy! Of the
international acts I myself am most interested in Familjen, Robots in Disguise
and Vampire Weekend.
Everyone has an opinion, but how and why
does the Icelandic music scene that seems to produce such a large number of
good bands?
Well, being in a band is cool. And everyone wants to be considered cool I guess
🙂
Dýrðin will play on Friday at 20:15 in Organ…
And secondly, the energetic Dr. Spock who will play on Friday at 21:30 in Art Museum…and their new album, Falcon Christ, will be in all good recordstores.
Hello, where are you
and what are you doing?
I am in bed with my girlfriend answering these questions, naked.
Who’s in the band?
We have Franz, Finni, Ottarr, Addi, Gudni and Tobbi.

can you describe your music in 3 words?
Crazy fucking awesome
Probably, 5 other bands will play
Airwaves at the same time as you, so why should people come and see your show?
Because we have a reputation as the best performing act in Iceland. Our shows are spectacular parties.
What other bands will you try to see at
the festival?
CSS, Benny Crespo's Gang, Motion Boys, Biffy Clyro and many
others.
Everyone has an opinion, but how and why
does the Icelandic music scene that seems to produce such a large number of
good bands?
Because none of the people start the bands to become rich and famous so all
involved do it for the sheer love of music and creativity.
