Kælan Mikla – opening up Iceland Airwaves 2014

Advertisements

I always love the first shows of the first night of Iceland Airwaves. There’s always a bit of magic in the air (and often some sleet etc) and it feels like Christmas morning!

For Iceland Airwaves 2014, Kælan Mikla are lucky (I think) to be filling one of those opening slots. And I am also lucky because I had been really enjoying their stuff on the soundcloud page and I’m also lucky because Sólveig from the band agreed to answer a few questions that I threw her way recently. So let’s do this…

Hello Sólveig! Where are you right now, and what are you doing?

I´m very hungover and at my friend’s place watching X-files. Super nice.

Who is in the band?

It’s me, Sólveig Matthildur, the drum/guitar-girl, Laufey Soffía, the vocal-girl and Margrét Rósa, bass-girl.

Looking at the schedule right now, it looks like you will be the first band I see at this year's Airwaves. I'm excited, are you?

Yes! We are very excited and so glad that we are playing, twice on venue and four times off venue.

What should I expect?

You should expect nothing. We will try to make a unique performance instead of covering the norm and people’s expectations.

You are described as poetry/punk. Are your songs a combination of both, or are they more one or the other?

Kælan Mikla´s first performance was actually on a poetry slam more like a group than a band. We are performing music and poetry on the same time.

Have you had a good look at the Airwaves schedule? What else are you really excited to see?

No not really…. but it´s probably really great. I look forward to see The Knifes and Perfect Pussy but I don´t want to plan too much – just try to have a great time and see as many acts as possible off- and on-venue. I´m very happy how many artists are performing, but I think it´s not punk rock enough.

Finally, can you give some advice for people attending Iceland Airwaves and visiting Iceland for the first time?

Iceland is OK. But it’s probably very nice if you´re just visiting. It´s small and everything is on Laugavegur. Don´t go to Kringlan. Shop in Bónus not 10-11. See as many shows as possible and stay on Laugavegur. But if you want to see our beautiful nature, go by yourself, don´t pay for somebody to point at the northern lights, whales or waterfalls it´s all there.

So, you need to get organised and go and see Kælan Mikla. You have many opportunities:

Wednesday 5th – Gaukurinn @19:10

Thursday 6th – Loft Hostel @ 16:15

Thursday 6th – Bar 11 @ 17:30

Saturday 8th – Straumur, Bio Paradis @ 17:00

Saturday 8th – Dillon @ 18:15

Saturday 8th – Frederiksen @ 21:40
